Storage/Handling Guidelines

Customers frequently ask if material in their storage, handling, and application equipment is compatible with propylene glycol aircraft deicers. There are technical differences between propylene glycol deicers from various producers, usually in the formulation of corrosion inhibitors. Therefore, some differences in material compatibility are expected. The following information applies to Kilfrost ABC-S Plus Type IV, which contains a minimum of 50% propylene glycol, by weight.

Note: If you are switching from another fluid to ABC-S Plus, please contact Cryotech for transition guidance.

STORAGE TANKS

Stainless steel storage tanks are recommended. Piping should also be of stainless steel with flow passage surfaces that are smooth and free of sharp edges or tight bends. Use of piping less than 2-inch internal diameter should be avoided.

PUMPS

Pumping can damage ABC-S Plus so certain pump types (e.g. gear) are unsuitable. Progressing cavity type pumps are recommended for most situations.

DELIVERY

The discharge of bulk material to storage is normally carried out under the supervision of a representative of the customer. However, before opening the discharge valve the tanker driver should, as much as possible, confirm that the vehicle is coupled to the correct storage tank and that it has sufficient free capacity to accept the delivery. The delivery note includes a declaration that the installation is ready to receive the delivery, which is signed by the customer's representative before discharge.

The driver is responsible for ensuring that the discharge valve and any delivery hoses carried by the vehicle are clean and will not cause contamination of the product.

The driver, in conjunction with the customer's representative, should take two samples of the product from the top manhole prior to discharge. These must be labeled with the product name, delivery reference, and date. The customer retains one sample. The other sample must be returned to Cryotech at 6103 Orthoway, Fort Madison, Iowa 52627. All samples should be retained for two years.

The customer's representative must sign the delivery note at the completion of the discharge.
