Sampling Procedure
For Kilfrost ABC-S and/or ABC-S Plus Type IV Aircraft Fluid
(PDF)
Section One to be used when sampling Kilfrost ABC-S and/or ABC-S Plus Type IV aircraft fluid trucks or containers.
Section Two to be used when testing shear of Type IV fluids from equipment nozzles.
Section One
Equipment Needed:
- 1 liter wide mouth polyethylene sample container
- Zone Sampler or Wheaton Bomb Sampler
- Disposable gloves, paper towels, Ziploc style plastic bag
- Truck/container seals
- Knock-off hammer for releasing hatch dogs (if applicable, typically only needed for iso-containers)
Procedure:
- Open container hatch and flush sampler by lowering sampler to sample depth. Allow sampler to fill, and then drain sampler back into tank.
- Collect sample by lowering sampler to approximately 3 feet below liquid surface and allow sampler to fill. Remove sampler and empty contents into sample bottle.
Note: If product color is not green, stop sampling and contact Cryotech before shipping!
- Repeat sampling until approximately a 1 liter sample has been collected. Allow some head space in bottle.
- After collecting sample, hatch must be properly closed, latched and sealed.
- Cap sample bottle, clean bottle exterior and label properly with:
- Date sampled
- Product Name - Kilfrost ABC-S and/or ABC-S Plus
- Sample location
- Name of person drawing sample
- Original container number
- Container number
- Seal number
- Tighten container cap (being careful not to break it), seal with tape, and place in a 1 gallon zip lock bag and package according to DOT requirements. Ship by courier service to:

Section Two
Equipment Needed:
- 55 gallon drum or 250 gallon tote, clean and dry
- 55 gallon black plastic bag
- String/rubber band
Procedure:
- Insert a clean 55 gallon black plastic bag into the drum or tote.
- Tie the plastic bag (using string or rubber bands) around the nozzle to prevent deicing fluid from being sprayed outside of a controlled area.
- Start equipment as you would for a Type IV deicing operation with pumps at factory setting.
- FULLY OPEN the nozzle for several seconds to discharge fluid into the plastic bag. (For equipment with common nozzles for Type I and Type IV, flush any Type I from the nozzle into a separate plastic bag, before this step.)
NOTE: It is CRITICAL the nozzle be fully open when taking this sample. A partially open nozzle will shear the fluid and will require retesting.
- Collect one (1) liter of fluid from the plastic bag and refer to the shipping procedures in Steps 5 and 6 in Section 1.
- Dispose of remaining Type IV fluid in accordance with airport environmental requirements.
