Storage and Handling considerations for Kilfrost ABC-S are identical to Kilfrost ABC-S Plus. If transitioning from ABC-S to ABC-S Plus, please contact Cryotech.

Storage and Handling Guidelines Type IV Propylene Glycol Aircraft Deicers

Customers frequently ask if material in their storage, handling, and application equipment is compatible with propylene glycol aircraft deicers. There are technical differences between propylene glycol deicers from various producers. The following information applies to Kilfrost ABC-S Plus Type IV, which contains a minimum of 50% propylene glycol, by weight.

STORAGE TANKS
For fluids at ambient temperatures, stainless steel and cross linked polyethylene storage tanks are recommended. Piping should also be of stainless steel or XLPE, and flow passage surfaces smooth and free of sharp edges or tight bends. Use of pipework less than 2-inch internal diameter should be avoided. Natural rubber seals and Neoprene should be avoided as they tend to swell with glycol/water mixes. Use gaskets, seals, and elastomers (such as PTFE, Viton, EPDM, Hypalon) that are compatible with propylene glycol.

Note - tanks and piping must be thoroughly clean prior to filling with ABC-S Plus if switching from a competitor's fluid..

PUMPS
Incorrect pumping can damage ABC-S Plus and certain pump types (e.g. centrifugal or gear pumps) are unsuitable. Progressing cavity type pumps are recommended for most situations (e.g. Moyno or equivalent).

HANDLING
Avoid contact with skin and eyes, and breathing mists/vapors when spraying. Store in tightly sealed containers, away from direct heat and strong oxidizing agents. Do not use uncoated mild steel tanks or piping. For recommendations on pumps, piping, and/or heated bulk storage, contact Cryotech.

Do not pump through partially open valves or through pipe systems less than 2" diameter. This may shear and damage the fluid. Viscosity of Type IV fluids can vary quite considerably from manufacturer to manufacturer. When changing brands, customers might find it necessary to make adjustments to nozzle settings or pump pressures in order to achieve the best possible spray pattern.

DELIVERY
The actual discharge of bulk material to storage is normally carried out under the supervision of a representative of the customer. However, before opening the discharge valve the tanker driver should confirm that the vehicle is coupled to the correct storage tank and that it has sufficient free capacity to accept the delivery. The delivery note includes a declaration that the installation is ready to receive the delivery, which is signed by the customer's representative before discharge.

The driver is responsible for ensuring that the discharge valve and any delivery hoses carried by the vehicle are clean and will not cause contamination of the product.

If customers request sampling at the time of delivery, then the driver and the customer's representative should take two samples of the product. These should be from the top manhole, 2-3 feet below the liquid surface, prior to discharge. These must be labeled with the product name, delivery reference, and date. The customer retains one sample. The other sample must be returned to Cryotech, Attn: Lab, at 6103 Orthoway, Fort Madison, Iowa 52627. All samples should be retained for two years.

STORAGE CONSIDERATIONS
Totes should be stored out of direct sunlight.

AVOID PROBLEMS...
Do not mix propylene glycol fluids from different manufacturers, except at approved concentrations.
Do not mix propylene glycol fluids with ethylene glycol fluids.
Keep tank and truck labels updated.
